RUWENZORI MOUNTAINS: THE LEGENDARY “MOUNTAINS OF THE MOON” – 2026 ADVENTURE TOURS

The Rwenzori Mountains National Park, famously known as the “Mountains of the Moon,” rise dramatically along the Uganda–DR Congo border in western Uganda. Stretching approximately 120km long and 65km wide, this spectacular mountain range offers some of Africa’s most diverse and breathtaking scenery — from equatorial glaciers and snow-capped peaks to bamboo forests, giant lobelias, and alpine moorlands.

Gazetted as a national park in 1991, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, and later recognized as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 2008, the Rwenzori Mountains hold exceptional global ecological value and remain one of Africa’s most unique trekking destinations.

The Roof of Uganda: Margherita Peak (5,109m)

The highest summit in the range is Margherita Peak (5,109m) on Mount Stanley, ranking as Africa’s third-highest mountain after Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. Unlike East Africa’s volcanic mountains such as Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Elgon, the Rwenzoris were formed through powerful tectonic uplift, with vast rock blocks rising from the floor of the Western Rift Valley.

The mountains were first described in AD 150 by the Alexandrine geographer Ptolemy, who called them the “Mountains of the Moon,” believing they were the source of the Nile. On May 24, 1888, explorer Henry Morton Stanley formally introduced the Rwenzori to the modern world, recording the name “Ruwenzori,” often interpreted locally as “Rain-Maker” or “Cloud-King.”

In 2010, Ms. Beryl Park made history at age 78 by becoming the oldest recorded climber to reach Margherita Peak — a testament to the mountain’s enduring spirit of adventure and inspiration.

Today, Rwenzori trekking tours remain one of Uganda’s most rewarding and challenging mountaineering experiences, ideal for hikers seeking remote wilderness, dramatic landscapes, and true expedition-style adventure.
